Back Pain
Acupuncture Treatment for Acute Back Pain
Back injuries are common and can involve a tremendous amount of treatment, including physical therapy, medications and sometimes surgery. Pain can interfere with work and play and can take weeks or months, sometimes even years to recover. Acupuncture can be an effective treatment for back pain, and can play a significant role in reducing recovery time from a back injury.
Acupuncture can be extremely effective for reducing recovery time when administered within 1-3 days of the injury. At this time, acupuncture can release the acute muscle spasm more easily. With the relaxation of the tissues around the injury sight, a slight herniation can begin to quickly resolve.
The first follow-up visit would take place as soon as the patient can be scheduled, within the next few days. The treatment would involve needle placement on the back, wrists, ankles and face. The length of treatment would be one hour.
These first initial treatments can greatly reduce recovery time and need for longer more involved treatments. By reducing the muscle spasm early on, the injury can begin to heal faster, thus reducing amount of various therapies and medications, and possibly the need for surgery. Additional acupuncture treatments may be needed depending on the case. Exercise or physical therapy may be recommended to help strengthen the back to prevent re-injury.
