FAQ
How can acupuncture help improve my health?
The benefits of acupuncture are wide-ranging. It helps the body to function better in all capacities, while also reducing pain. Acupuncture brings a calming effect on the body, mind, and spirit, and ultimately helps to reduce the effects of stress. Acupuncture regulates the immune system, the hormonal system, the nervous system and the digestive system. Other benefits of treatment include support and consultation for making healthier lifestyle choices which will reduce your susceptibility to illness or injury.
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture has evolved over the past 5000 years into a complete medical system which can diagnose, treat and prevent illness. It is a safe and effective way to treat a wide variety of conditions.
Fine, sterile, single-use only needles are gently placed in specific acupoints on your body. The needles stimulate your body’s energy, known as Qi (pronounced “chee”). The goal of this stimulation is to balance the body, to improve the function of our body’s many systems, and to clear obstruction of Qi which might be causing pain or illness.
Acupuncture can help you to heal from acute or chronic problems, by enhancing your body’s natural ability to heal and improving your body’s immune system. Acupuncture treatments balance both the body and mind to allow for health and rejuvenation.
What is Qi?
Qi is the Chinese word for life-energy. Acupuncture affects the Qi (pronounced chee) of the body which flows in channels through all of our organs and limbs. Qi affects all of the muscle systems, internal organs, body fluids, blood and metabolic processes. Pain and illness occur when these systems experience disturbances or disharmony.
With needle, magnets, heat-application, and several other tools, the body’s system may be regulated.
What are the needles like?
Needles are sterilized, single-use only, pre-packaged and disposable. The needle are so thin (thinner than your hair) that they can go right through a balloon without popping it. Most techniques are very gentle, and produce a sensation of a peaceful warmth and hum of energy flowing throughout the body. Patients go into a deep state of relaxation, and many fall asleep during the treatment.
What does a treatment involve?
Treatments begin with a comprehensive interview so that the acupuncturist has a full understanding of your body’s current state. The pulse, tongue and abdomen are observed to complete the diagnostic picture. The treatment is geared specifically to your unique condition, and it is performed while you rest on a table in a state of deep relaxation.
A course of treatment typically involves six to ten sessions. Relief often begins with the first few treatments. Individual treatment plans are discussed and evaluated with the patient.
Are there side effects?
There are no harmful side effects from acupuncture treatment. The positive effects are relaxation and stress reduction. Even if you are afraid of needles, you will most likely find that you are relaxed before the first treatment is over.
How do I prepare for treatment?
Wear loose comfortable clothing to allow for relaxation while lying on a table. Arrive early to fill out paperwork for the first visit. Treatment takes about an hour. Give yourself time to relax after treatment if possible.
What is the Cost of Treatment?
Treatment costs $65 per visit. Worker’s compensation and auto insurance often cover treatment. Three visits for quitting smoking cost $135. You may be able to use your flexible spending account to pay for treatment.
Will my insurance pay for acupuncture?
Some insurance plans are starting to offer acupuncture benefits. Call your insurance provider to find out if you have coverage.
We are not billing directly to health insurance companies, so if you do have benefits, you will need to pay for your visit at the time of service, but I will provide you with the forms needed to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.
We are able to bill directly for worker’s compensation and auto insurance claims. Ask your case worker if your insurance will cover acupuncture visits. Most of these types of insurance do cover acupuncture.
